An old ladder for harvesting grapes
Wine has long been a significant element in this region.

A winery... a museum
Round arches, tower stones preserved in their natural location, small openings, escape tunnels, defensive loopholes, ancient wells, and underground waters flowing right beneath the winery (rest assured: the two precious liquids never come into contact with each other…).
Welcome to the ancient cellar of Il Poggio – Abbadia Ardenga, in Torrenieri (Montalcino), owned by the Società di Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni of Siena.
The exterior walls, recently plastered in a yellowish hue, appear modest and unassuming.
However, inside, you can admire traces of a long and glorious past.
Here lie the remnants of a feudal fortification and the “Fermata-Osteria” that once served travelers on the Roman-Francigena road.
It is truly a museum, crafted not only with passion and love but also with skill and modern exhibition techniques.
Today, these halls are part of the historical treasures of the Val d’Orcia Park and attract a discerning and appreciative audience.
In the heart of the winery, there is a sort of vault where dozens of barrels and numerous bottles of precious wine rest and age peacefully; the oldest jewel dates back to 1955.
This is a rare collection of bottles of the most famous wine in the world: Brunello.
A place that undoubtedly commands respect for such perseverance and hard work.
The art of winemaking blends with history, preservation, and the display of extremely rare artifacts.

The winery has several vineyards with vines over twenty-five years old.
Paraphrasing the Tuscan saying that “an old hen makes good broth,” one could say that “an old vine makes good wine.”

The Vineyards
The vineyards are located on hillside terrains facing southeast on the Sienese side of the Municipality of Montalcino.
Thanks to the excellent soil composition and a highly favorable microclimate, the grapes here reach full ripeness and develop a rich array of delightful aromas, which they then impart to the wine.
Respecting centuries-old traditions, the winery’s production structure has remained unchanged.
The entire estate is owned by the Società di Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni in Siena and consists of 8 hectares of olive groves and 10 hectares of vineyards.
Half of the vineyards are dedicated to the production of Brunello di Montalcino.
On the remaining land, a variety of herbaceous plants are cultivated, and livestock is raised.
This integrated approach to agriculture allows for the management of the estate using minimal amounts of fertilizers and chemicals, resulting in healthy, genuine, and high-quality products.

We cherish our past
Good or bad, it is a part of us
And even if our roots
Are soaked in earth and mud
We look to the future with hope
Where flowers and fruits we shall grow.

The Artifacts
The Winery Museum is located in the municipality of Montalcino, in the village of Torrenieri, at the crossroads of the old state road No. 2, Cassia.
Inside the winery, there is a remarkable collection of artifacts, generally quite simple but all authentic, mostly dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
In the early decades of the 1900s, agriculture experienced a revolution with the introduction of new driving forces—internal combustion engines, fire-powered machines, and, most notably, electricity.
As a result, most of the equipment used until then began to be replaced, abandoned, and destroyed, both on farms and by sharecroppers.
The objects in this museum have miraculously escaped the same unfortunate fate that befell so many of their counterparts.
The tools now hanging on the walls of the winery museum were once genuinely used in daily agricultural work.
